Who defines mainstream, and why do you perceive it to be more valid than non-mainstream?

If you reduce your information intake to only mainstream sources, and the number of mainstream sources is limited, then you run the risk of allowing the few to control all the "valid" news.

Don't control freaks scare you?

For example, I have acted in a contrarian manner towards the pablum that the mainstream media distributes on behalf of Wall Street. That strategy has made me and my family a lot of money.

I found quite a few non-mainstream sources of information, that proved to be far more accurate and honest than the mainstream sources.
