Scores arrested at anti-war "die-in" in New York

NEW YORK (AFP) - New York police arrested scores of anti-war protesters, who lay down and blocked Manhattan's Fifth Avenue during an organised "die-in" against the US-led conflict in Iraq (news - web sites).

Several hundred demonstrators took part in the protest, which organisers said marked the first in a series of civil disobedience actions.

Police began handcuffing and removing the protesters after they lay down in the street outside the landmark Rockefeller Center, disrupting traffic during the morning rush hour.

Many held or tied signs around their necks, protesting the war and its coverage by the US media.

Despite the arrests, the demonstration passed peacefully, unlike an anti-war march last weekend in which activists clashed with police, leading to around 70 arrests.

At least 200,000 anti-war protesters had taken to the streets across the United States last Saturday, even as opinion polls showed a rise in public support for the war.
