I don't know what a withdrawal would or could achieve, now. You may be right that it's too late.

I'd argue we might still settle on terms, say once Baghdad is encircled. Saddam goes to the same ignominious exile as many other former West-friendly dictators, say... and then perhaps ask the UN to run the place, with us peacekeeping. But it'll be expensive for the US and UK, which will need to foot much of the bill for the mess we've made of what used to be a barely-functional country.
And don't expect to get away leaving a mess as in Afghanistan, whatever happens... apart from anything else, the oil is too valuable.
What we have made, my friends, is a mess which IMO will indeed rival Palestine. At least we know exactly who is to blame...
