Today, Jews for the first time ever, are part of the permanent In Group. It is fascinating, to watch the ideological rapprochement, between the fundamentalist Christians (whose anti-semitism was always just beneath the surface) and the Jews.

Michael Lind has an argument about the basis for this new connection, one that I have planned to make some posts about but keep making it the third item on my work list. I'll get around to it sometime. If you wish to take a look, he has some of his work posted here. newamerica.net

As for the degree to which anti-semitism is just beneath the surface of Protestant fundamentalism, having grown up in the midst of that and still maintain contacts there, it's just barely beneath the surface. It doesn't get publicly spoken, but, unfortunately, it's there and deep.

As for the degree to which Jews are now an ingroup, I'm going to have to take a pass on that one. In the US, they are clearly a target of opportunity for the Bush folk's political crew. That seems to me to still be a work in progress. If the Bush folk should get to a point at which they didn't need the jewish vote, I wouldn't bet on the outcomes.
