In the past few weeks, the Pentagon has picked up "credible information that Iraqi operatives were planning to use botulinum toxin to POISON AMERICAN FOOD AND WATER supplies." ("Can Iraq Hit America?" Newsweek, 17 March 2003, p. 32).
IRAQ WILL UNDOUBTEDLY ATTEMPT TO RETALIATE AGAINST AMERICA. Iraqi or al Qaeda suicide volunteers could be simply injected with smallpox and then dispersed throughout the U.S. As Newsweek warns, "All they’d have to do is hang out in crowds and slowly die."
Recently captured evidence shows terrorists have plans for attacks against U.S. hospitals using anthrax, smallpox and botulism, AND possible citywide attacks with radiological "dirty" bombs and terror sniper teams. Experts predict that as the U.S. attack on Iraq proceeds, attempts WILL be made to “launch” chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction against many U.S. targets.
An especially vulnerable target: THE U.S. POWER GRID, which experts say could be shut down by terrorists armed with nothing more than shotguns and aluminum foil. An attack on the power grid would paralyze cities and make it impossible to even pump water to homes and offices.
With the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and the U.S. military involved in armed conflict around the world -- from Afghanistan to Columbia -- we must do our part, and be vigilant and prepared here at home. The national terror alert has been elevated from yellow to orange or "high," to indicate that another major attack against the U.S. could occur at any time. Our government does not have the capability to fully protect every American family.
