Its all about oil. Iraq has the second largest oil reserves in the world with 90% of the country still unexplored. The current U.S. base in Saudi is not that certain for the long term. Iran, Iraq and other ME nations have been pricing their oil in euro-dollars, a move that directly threatens the U.S. dollar and therefor the U.S. standard of living. Strategically, exerting influence on the ME makes the influence of the U.S. greater. The post Iraqi oil business is already being cut up with a huge chunk going to Haliburton - Cheney's old company. That this war is about freeing the Iraqi people is spin and nothing else. Without oil Bush wouldn't give a flying F$%# about Iraq.
