The problem for Iran is that it is sandwiched between US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. I'm not too sure they could choke off the Strait of Hormuz against a determined US navy. I agree that Syria would be the most likely next target, but the Iranians must see that the US conquest of both Iraq and Syria would leave them completely isolated. They would be in the position of begging the help of the ex-soviet "Stans", who are not in a condition to be much help. Meanwhile the Russians would be crying crocodile tears over the suddenly expensive oil reserves they have.

Another problem for the US going after Syria would be that Syria, recognizing the inevitable, might provoke Israel. If the Israelis joined on the US side, the entire Muslim world would rise against us and the oil would not flow. Even the Turks might be compelled to join against us if Israel got involved. Try to imagine the effects of $100+/bbl oil on our limping and fragile economy.

The basic thing is that this entire unnecessary adventure could quickly turn into the biggest can of worms since 1945, and the rest of the world would be a long time forgiving us for that.
