"Whereas humility, fasting, and prayer in times of danger have long been rooted in our essential national convictions and have been a means of producing unity and solidarity among all the diverse people of this Nation as well as procuring the enduring grace and benevolence of God;"

Yep. That should draw out God's reluctant benevolence...show Him how hungry we are! We still have 365 days of the year to waddle our fat from bar-room to bedpost. Besides, we don't have to actually fast entirely for that one day. Just an honest effort to cut down a bit should be sufficient to procure His benevolence. One egg instead of four. One sugar in the coffee instead of three...and seven martinis instead of eight.

We can make up for our sacrifice tomorrow...
