The Department of Homeland Security is combing the world for new sensor technologies and will soon launch a Web site to track thousands of vendor solicitations. Some of these tech breakthroughs may smack of Big Brother, but if they work, they surely will slow down evildoers. Sight

Excerpt:

Late last year American Technology (NasdaqSC:ATCO - News) Corp. introduced the HyperSonic Sound system, which uses high-frequency sound to create the acoustic equivalent of a laser beam. An operator can speak a message into the device, which converts into inaudible ultrasound. The ultrasound waves interact with the air, creating a second set of ultrasound waves, which in turn combine with the original waves to create an audible signal. The device lets you talk to someone standing in a crowd up to 150 yards away yet be largely inaudible to anyone else. The Navy is installing a related version that can be used as a nonlethal weapon, delivering sound at up to 165 decibels into a terrorist's ear. That is 100 times as loud as a gunshot. The burst would knock him to the ground and could induce migraines, vomiting, even diarrhea. The sound beam, with a range of 500 yards,is good for scaring off pirates or rousting al Qaeda from caves. The Pentagon has bought several devices at more than $20,000 each.
