So to carry the disease metaphor, it's these dictatorships that are the real cancer to enlightened civilization. I happened to catch Friedman on Discovery the other night. He made that point about as strongly as I've seen it made. It's a point that needs to be made, and strongly. And the rest of your post also. The problem, at the moment, is the best path out of the present dilemma. I consider the Bush strategy not only not a way out but one that makes it worse by increasing recruitment for Islamist parties, by appearing even more visibly as the backing of dictators, and by advancing a simplistic notion of democracy as simply majoritarian rule which, in most of the ME counties, would lead to Islamist government. Got any thoughts?
