Allies sink Saddam's yacht:
From correspondents in Kuwait

US-led forces have yet to get their hands on Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein but they may have hit him where it hurts - sinking his luxurious yacht, a British commander said.

Captain Michael Cochrane, commander of the British frigate Chatham, said that air strikes on Tuesday by coalition warplanes on the southern port of Basra hit the yacht Al Mansur among other vessels.

"There are reliable reports indicating that in a blow to Saddam's presidential pride, the huge presidential yacht is among the ships sunk," Cochrane told reporters.

British officers said the attack also wiped out most of what remained of the Iraqi navy, two large patrol boats and a supply ship. He said one other Iraqi patrol boat was already sunk and six others captured.

US and British naval forces had nearly total control of the waterways, according to the officers aboard the Chatham, which is guarding the mouth of the key Shatt Al Arab outlet and two vast oil platforms.

But they said one patrol boat may have fled and a number of small suicide speedboats could be at large.
