There seems to be some pride and honor in Republican Guard forces that keep them plugging away in traditional military fashion against a far superior force. Pride, honor and no choice. These guys are deeply implicated in the Saddam regime. You can be sure that none of them got their positions without committing horrible crimes - it is the MO of such a regime: only trust a 'made man' who is too drenched in blood to go back on you.
