On what the US population would do and/or think as a consequence of long term occupation of Iraq, I agree that the direction you suggest is the most likely: the population would begin to back away. But there is another history here to keep in mind. In cases of serious warfare, the general population tends to veer between extremes. One possible extreme would be not only to strengthen resolve, as you put it, but to support even more drastic actions. There is a segment of US population that, in the Vietnam war, considered the US did not use the full array of weapons available. And that the failure to do so led to the loss. It's a reasonable argument that faction, thrown forward a generation, is now in power in the US.
