Here's a letter I have thought about writing to my local newspaper, except that I have to decide if I want to get crank calls in the middle of the night that frighten my family:

As best I can tell, what this Iraq war has achieved so far is:

1. The weakening of NATO.

2. The undermining of the United Nations as a source of consensus for military action.

3. The alienation of the larger European countries.

4. Undermining of Tony Blair's support in his own country.

5. The placement of U.S. soldiers and marines in a situation quite different from what they were led to expect.

6. The stiffening of support for Saddam Hussein inside Iraq.

7. Increased alienation of the entire Muslim world.

8. The expenditure of large amounts of very expensive munitions without any decisive effect.

9. Dissension and uneasiness within the United States.

The worst miscalculation may turn out to be the failure to appreciate the power of patriotic feelings that arise in people when an alien force invades their country. When that happens they may not care how wicked their leaders are--as was the case with Stalin in the German invasion of WW II.

The Bush administration has also squandered the budget surplus and set into motion tax cuts and spending increases that guarantee serious damage to the U. S. economy through inflation. Holders of pensions and 401Ks who have converted to bonds will see their capital eroded severely.
