Well Bush has really fouled this up. He has committed America to battle with insufficient forces to get the job done. That's an easy way to lose a war. It doesn't matter how much high technology you have, if senior commanders underestimate the enemy and send a force that is too small than you lose. Bush let his SecDef turn this war into a (failed) experiment in new age ideas like "shock and awe" and "transformation" and "4th generation warfare" instead of backing US troops up with as much combat power as they could get to the theatre. That's unforgivable.

This has been compounded by a massive intelligence disaster. The combat power of the Iraqis was seriously underestimated by the intelligence community. That's the kind of thing that can get America defeated. If they can't do what is meant to be their core business then they are not worth having.

Fortunately the immediate situation is probably fixable, if commanders can adjust their plans to take account of the changed circumstances. Unless things are worse than they look then it should be possible to take out the Republican Guard. However there doesn't seem to be any answer to the question of how to take down Baghdad in a politically acceptable way. For a start, a lot more forces will be needed. We will probably have to adopt the tactics the Russians used in Grozny of destroying the city and then occupying the rubble. The civilian casualties and the resulting backlash from the Arab world will be massive. I hope we are prepared for the loss of the Suez Canal and violence from Arabs living within the US. Also, the post-war situation inside Iraq will be extremely difficult.
