The mainstream is pretty easily identified, as falling sufficiently within the consensus as to permit much common ground for argument. In other words, there may be controversy in the mainstream, but it is of such a nature as to be recognized as legitimate by most all parties.

The mainstream may be wrong, the fringe may be right, however, we live in a country that has strong journalistic standards about sourcing and evidence, and a pretty strong set of professional ethics. Similarly, we live in a culture that has well- established protocols for the advancement of scholarship and scientific research. Thus, the burden is on the fringe to prove itself right, the presumption is always in favor of the mainstream, especially when the mainstream itself legitimizes certain controversies, thus saying that not all minority views are fringe.
