I posted an even- handed account, according to which Nixon's order for a coup was ineffective; there has never been proof that the CIA initiated the actually successful coup; Allende began to rule as a dictator, ignoring the Chilean Congress and suppressing dissent; the more left wing elements of his coalition began expropriation without even the color of law; the polarization of Chilean society was practically inevitable, given Allende's policies; the economic erosion of the Chilean economy had more to do with his policies than the CIA; and, finally, the coup made sense as an expression of the situation within Chile, rather than as something manufactured by the CIA. Doubtless, the CIA supported one side over the other. However, to claim that they "overthrew the duly elected leader of the country", without taking into account all else that went on before the coup, is fatuous........
