>I can say that those grocery specials are at least twice, or even more times, as expensive as in my local supermarket (rands converted into USD). But then in SA a MacDonald's hamburger costs $1. (maybe a bit more now that the rand has strengthened) The little house is incredibly expensive but you are talking about LA. I'm sure in rural America a 2-bedroom house with one bath would sell for $80K --- but then how would the people be employed? The reason people generally live in big cities is because of the work opportunities. That's why I say an expensive home is the opportunity cost of being employed, especially in a field that one has studied at university.

Searle I am going to go into detail here the U experience in certain fields is a non plus in certain fields. Over saturation seems to be the problem so area no longer takes priority being employed does. Wages in solid type jobs meaning government and U are not excessive. Medicine I think is probably one of the most difficult areas due to cost control. The pressure must be huge due to the case load.

Two people I know are getting married. The job market in what appears on the surface to be an excellent field here in LA is nil the result of this is a marriage that begins on the base of we shall commute between cities on the weekends. Good news in this case is at least it is on the same coast.
There is no guarantee anymore with or without your PHD. The only thing i can guarantee is that the US is one very inner competitive climate with terribly high costs if you compare it to external areas.
