DOHA, Qatar (CNN) -- Four U.S. soldiers with the Army's 3rd Infantry Division were killed Saturday morning when suicide bombers attacked a military checkpoint in the central Iraqi town of Najaf, a U.S. Central Command spokesman said.

Two people dressed in civilian clothes set off the explosion at the checkpoint, which was operated by the Army's 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, said Col. Frank Thorp, a U.S. Central Command spokesman.

Central Command had said earlier that five soldiers were killed in the attack.
