FOOD & DINING It may be yellow, but it's not from France

It has come to this: The people who make French's mustard want you to know that their product is not French -- that is, from France, the country some Americans love to hate these days.

After a couple of TV stations mentioned French's mustard as a target of the boycott-France campaign, the company issued a statement explaining that the bright yellow spread actually is named for the family company, R.T. French, that introduced it in 1904 at the St. Louis World's Fair.

''It's unfortunate in this climate that our brand name screams 'French,' '' spokesman Jason Amar says. ''We got an e-mail from a consumer who said he loves it but won't buy it even though he knows it's American.''

More irony: French's is owned by a big food-products company in Britain -- America's staunchest ally in the Iraq war.
