The Kurds in Turkey stay because when the artificial borders were drawn up by Churchill the lands they lived on ended up on the Turkish side of the border. Another cultural phenomenon that may be escaping you is that peoples in many cultures are very strongly tied to the land their ancestors had been living on.
The complete disregard for cultural make-up is one of the reasons the rest of the world sees the US as arrogant. And rightly so I would say.
Churchill's son said that Winston deeply regretted backing down under pressure from his desire to include a Kurdish nation when the Middle East pie was being sliced up.
