Actually, I do not consider democratization a sufficient reason to be in Iraq. We are there for security reasons. Democratization is a bonus.

By the way, the British, who were the most benign imperialists, were also quite conservative, and generally favored ruling through the native elites. In India, the Raj left most local rulers in power, while superimposing certain administrative and legal improvements. They were not there to democratize, per se.
