I did fair too taking the test , even missing the dates of the acts of congress changing the inscription on our monies to read "In God We Trust "

and the inclusion of " One Nation Under God" being added to the pledge of alliegance , both being ratified right after the McCarthy era into the Cold War in the mid-1950's . I had forgotten that . Seems no politician then wanted to be caught dead on the wrong side of God so they plastered God all over the last thing God the Son prolly valued , being money .

Jefferson would probably have abhored this , rather seeing men act on matters out of the deism of reason and self-examined consciences and thoughtfulness , not by the fear & hysteria of the majority , stirred up by deranged demagogues like McCarthy . Of course the religious "right" of his time fairly well hated and despised much of Jefferson's tendency to place God out of their reach where He should be , and yet acknowledge a "Nature's God " that could be accessed by all .

Deists like Thomas Jefferson in the early 1800s sent our navy to crush the Barbery pirates yet we signed the Treaty of Tripoli not only proclaiming friendship but clearly stating America was never founded on the Christian or any other revealed religion.

In all fairness Christianity since the 4th century has been just as murderous and intolerant as Islam. Christian fundamentalism hates liberty and freedom of conscience as much as fundamentalist Islam and even has its own version of "Jihad" known as the "Just War" doctrine. Before becoming civilized in the 18th century Christianity was as bad as most Islamic countries today. The Christian Right so hates what it calls "secular humanism" it's willing to join forces with the devil himself to defeat it . So what does that make them ? ;-)

Here's another good link directly to TJ , though there are many concerning Jefferson's outlooks and attitudes ..and many other links besides:
