Venezuela Sees Gasoline Exports Normal by 6 Weeks

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuela's gasoline refining and export operations should be totally restored to normal within six weeks following the disruptions caused by an opposition strike in December and January, the state oil firm (Petroleos de Venezuela) PDVSA said Friday.

Asked specifically about gasoline operations, PDVSA President Ali Rodriguez told Reuters: "I imagine that in the course of a month, a month and a half, all refining and export activities will be completely back to normal".

The world's No. 5 oil exporter had not shipped gasoline abroad since last December when opponents of leftist President Hugo Chavez began a two-month strike that fizzled out in early February.

Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez had said Wednesday Venezuela would restart gasoline exports at the end of March.

Rodriguez said the country's refining capacity had been restored to 1.014 million barrels per day (bpd).

Following the crippling strike, Venezuela has been struggling to restart its 1.3 million bpd domestic refinery system using troops and replacement workers who took over from thousands of strikers after they were sacked,

It has also enlisted the help of foreign oil firms to restart deep cokers.

Rodriguez repeated government assertions that Venezuela had restored its overall oil production to pre-strike levels, saying output was currently at 3.14 million bpd.

Dissident PDVSA workers fired for their participation in the strike aimed at forcing Chavez out of office have put output closer to 2.45 million bpd.
