US administration knows, and most of the public knows that staying there (Iraq) long term will be a disaster.

Agreed.

And yet, the only way to win back the world's respect is to enable a stable, representative government there.

Left to their own devices, the Iraqis could conceivably install a new regime that is hostile to US interests.

Therein lies the rub; we can't hold on but we can't turn loose, either.
