I don't know if I believe that the consumer has continued to buy at 2000 levels in this recession. I agree the consumer held up the economy but that is just a comparison against the extremely depressed capital spending sector. The people I know (who are, most definitely, consumers) are not buying anything- everyone who is working is afraid of losing their job. So what we are seeing wrt consumer spending seems like it has to be some sort of trough to me. I expect an upswing late this year or 2004 from the consumer, hopefully some $$ goes to electronics and computers.
