More Than 1,000 Independent Studies Prove Lightspan Achieve Now Helps Increase Academic Performance
Growing Body of Research Documents Gains at Schools Nationwide
SAN DIEGO, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Lightspan, a leading provider of high-quality educational products and services used in schools and homes to help increase academic achievement, announced today more than 1,000 independent studies prove the effectiveness of Lightspan's flagship reading and math program, Lightspan Achieve Now.
Lightspan Chairman and CEO John Kernan stated: "Research was a foundation upon which this company was built. Since 1996 we have systemically worked with schools to help them develop high-quality action-based research that documents the positive impact of our products on increased student achievement. Now more than ever -- with the No Child Left Behind law specifying the use of evidence-based solutions -- Lightspan schools see significant value in this commitment to research."
Rosa Escoto, Principal at Andrew Jackson Elementary School (P.S. 145) in Brooklyn, New York, said: "We selected Lightspan Achieve Now reading and math curriculum largely based on Lightspan's strong theoretical base of research and their ability to assist us in the design and analysis of our own data. In addition to accelerated growth in student achievement, our school-based action research also reflects a commitment to the use of data-driven practices to drive instructional improvement. This is reflected in significant gains in reading and math for students who used Lightspan at school, home, and in our after-school program."
With funding from the U.S. Department of Education's 21st Century Community Learning Center program and other local sources, Lightspan Achieve Now was implemented in 1st grade classes during the 2001-2002 school year at Andrew Jackson Elementary School (P.S. 145). Research showed strong gains among students in reading and mathematics, as measured by the Early Childhood Literacy Assessment Systems (ECLAS): Over 95% of first-grade students using Lightspan Achieve Now realized improvement in Reading.
Lightspan's growing body of research includes results from 1,089 schools and districts in 39 states, involving nearly 40,000 students of virtually every demographic category.
