Nokia to use own CDMA chips in China

A NICE TWIST to events here with Nokia announcing that it should soon be supplying CDMA based handsets into the Chinese market.

So the world's leading handset vendor – and a European company to boot - is to supply the world's largest Communist state with CDMA handsets rather than rival GSM handsets.

Puts a lie to the claim that CDMA is an American technology. Nokia has also said it intends to merge four existing joint manufacturing ventures in China into one.

That will create one of the largest foreign invested enterprises in China, as well as one of the largest Chinese manufacturers and exporters in the mobile telecommunications industry. Nokia is still the major shareholder with over 60 per cent of the shares.

Significantly the new company will begin production of CDMA handsets using Nokia chipsets, pending Chinese government approval. Which proves, of course, that you can build a CDMA network without having to use Qualcomm's products if you really, really want to.
