The 2004 election will depend upon two things: what the economy looks like by this time next year and how this war against Iraq goes.

I think the economy is the major concern. Because wars are soon forgotten as we learned in 1992. If the economy is still stagnant by this time next year, and it might very well be as it looks like we're heading for a double-dip recession, Bush will be in real trouble. Especially if the Democrats can field a viable candidate. Of course if we get the double-wammy of quagmire war that is still going on next year and a bad economy, Bush will certainly be doomed. But, I doubt that's going to happen. Bush has too much riding on this war and the U.S.'s overpowering air superiority will ensure a victory eventually. I know they said that about Viet Nam, but I think Iraq is different, since the enemy can't hide in the jungle (but can in the city) and if we take out Saddam and his leadership the Iraqi army will probably crumble.
