in a classic experiment by b.f. skinner,
pigeons were given food automatically every
15 seconds.

the birds did not have to do anything for
the food to appear, but clearly the birds
thought otherwise.

for example, if a bird had one leg raised
when the food first appeared, it might keep
lifting the same foot to test to see if
that was the way to get more food.

sure enough, a few more seconds pass and
food arrives, reinforcing this behavior.
after awhile the bird is hopping around all
the time on one leg.

other birds developed different superstitious
behaviours like bobbing, twirling and pecking.

... just like people, no?
