Everyone has a conscience. Many young men in SA refused to serve the apartheid regime and preferred jail to arbitrarily killing blacks and likewise, in Israel, there are many young men who refuse to kill Palestinians in the occupied territories and also choose jail rather than serve in the army.

However, in a way I agree they are in a bit of a predicament. Firstly, the troops were suckered into joining the army --- they thought it was going to be a paid vacation with a university degree thrown in. Secondly, having joined up, they were suckered into going to Iraq --- they thought it was going to be a walkover.

Au contraire. I think the leaders on both sides actually want war --- but for different reasons. Baby Bush wants to show his daddy that he's a man at last, but history will prove otherwise.

And Saddam wants to go down in history as a martyr not only for his people but for all Muslims. He's had a violent life and is hated by many and knows if one lives by the sword so must one die by it. But, in fact, he's laughing all the way to the cemetery because he knows that the despised Americans are going to kill him and he couldn't think of a better way to die. He will be revered forever, even by those who hate him.
