ERICSSON RECEIVES NEW ORDER FOR NEXT-GENERATION WIDEBAND WIRELESS MULTIMEDIA EXPERIMENTAL SYSTEM
STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 31, 1997--Ericsson today announced that Japan Telecom Co., Ltd. has selected it to develop a next-generation experimental system to deliver wideband wireless multimedia services. The system will be based on Ericsson's 5 MHz Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) technology. Initially, the system will support data transfer rates of up to 384 kbps that may later be expanded up to 2 Mbps.
The purpose with the operator's experimental system is to carry out timely research of the WCDMA technology pioneered by Ericsson as the radio access method for third-generation mobile telephone systems. During 1998, the new experimental system will be used to make in-depth studies of radio propagation and network management aspects of Wideband CDMA.
Moreover, by using Ericsson's WCDMA technology Japan Telecom plans to execute the experiments in order to facilitate the realization of an entire range of new wireless mobile multimedia communications that require a wideband radio interface, such as wireless high-speed Internet/intranet applications, wireless electronic multimedia mail and wireless full-motion video, etc.
The Japan Telecom order is the second received by Ericsson for a WCDMA experimental system. The technology draws on Ericsson's pioneering research in the early 1990s that led to the 1995 establishment of the company's wideband test bed in Sweden.
``We will use this new experimental system supplied by Ericsson to actively contribute to advancing the standardization of next-generation mobile communications technology, IMT 2000,'' says Mr. Tadae Kataoka, Director of the Advanced Mobile Communications Division of Japan Telecom Co., Ltd.
``We are honored to be awarded this order and to help Japan Telecom spearhead the development of Wideband CDMA technology,'' says Kurt Hellstrom, Executive Vice President of Ericsson. ``The Japan Telecom order confirms our position as the pioneer and world leader in WCDMA and a driving force in the development of true third-generation mobile telephone technology.''
Japan Telecom Co., Ltd. is a major telecommunications carrier in Japan. The principal business of the company consists of domestic long-distance telephone services and leased line services through its nationwide fiber-optic cable network. The company also has cellular telephone service operations through its affiliates, i.e. the Digital Phone companies and Digital TU-KA companies.
Ericsson's 90,000 employees are active in more than 130 countries. Their combined expertise in fixed and mobile networks, mobile phones and infocom systems makes Ericsson the world-leading supplier in telecommunications. |
