Truck explodes outside Embassy
1.01AM BST, 1 Apr 2003
A truck has exploded outside the British Embassy in Iran.

No British staff were injured but the driver was killed in the explosion.

It is not yet clear whether it was an accident or an attack on the embassy in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

The truck exploded into flames outside the main gates causing superficial damage to the gates.

"It's improbable that this was a suicide attack, but the case needs more investigation," said Ali Taala, general director of security and political affairs at Tehran's governor's office.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "A car exploded outside the main gates. No Embassy staff were injured but the driver died.

"It is not clear whether it was an attack or an accident."

The embassy did not receive any threat or warning before the incident.

There are around 10 British staff at the British embassy.

The UK now has diplomatic relations with Iran, a fundamentalist Islamic republic, bordering Iraq.
