The blame on the news media is that they played along and never pushed for an answer before the war started.

20/20 hindsight, Sajjad. I just heard John Burns of the Times, one of the best reporters on the story who has been in Baghdad all this time, say that he was surprised that the regime had kept its grip as well as it had, and he thought most Baghdadis were surprised too. He said he had underestimated the tools an entrenched police state has to maintain itself. If he is surprised, so is everybody else.
