IDT Invests In IP Switch Startup Ipsilon By Tom McHale San Mateo, Calif. - Integrated Device Technology Inc. (IDT) has made what it calls a "strategic investment" in Ipsilon Networks, a Palo Alto, Calif., startup
Ipsilon, which makes an Internet protocol (IP) switch that integrates IP routing software with Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switching hardware in a single scalable platform, is a privately held company launched with venture capital in 1994; it shipped its first IP switch, the ATM1600, last month.
"IDT is really a component maker that is building the Internet infrastructure, with just about everything we make going into routers, bridges, and switches," said an IDT spokeswoman.
According to IDT, the investment in Ipsilon is aimed at bringing together the expertise of the two companies to enable faster, more reliable, and better quality network communications. IDT brings its ATM expertise to the bargain in products such as its segmentation and reassembly controller and physical-layer transceiver used in ATM network interface cards.
"This is a minor equity investment," explained John Mick, vice president of IDT's systems technology group. "It's a marriage of silicon and software expertise, and the two companies will be jointly developing products," he said. While product development is already under way, Mick characterized the relationship as long term; he doesn't expect any product announcements before the end of the year.
ATM networking technology has made significant inroads into wide-area- network backbones, but it cannot currently accommodate the most widely used network protocol, the IP, without complex software translation or Ipsilon's IP switching products, according to IDT. |
