Come on Chris, give a straight answer and don't get too bugged down in the analogy. It's really a simple matter of degrees. Do I love my family? Yes. Will I kill you to save them? yes. Will do it to upgrade the car? No. If I'd said yes, it meant I don't think you are as human as my family. Or worse, I am not human.

If you truly believed that Chileans were as human as Americans, you would have felt more responsibility towards the tens of thousands who were tortured because your taxes and your votes were used to put a brutal military dictator in charge. But if they were disposable to you, then you would actually want the kind of government that "protects" you from copper shortage.

It is not that hard to understand this logic on one side we have copper (or oil or phosphate) and on the other side we have people. And don't go off the deep end saying that we must have the copper/oil/etc. Those people, whom by the way rightfully own it, are not going to eat it; they want to sell it to us. But they wanted it on more equitable terms.

Did you see the movie Swordfish? The premise of the movie is that not only it is acceptable to trade one life for another, but it is good to kill others to have a better standard of living. Now this being a Hollywood movie and us being the good guys and all, the only people who had to be killed to give us good life were the bad guys. But the reality is that many people cheered Travolta on and most don't see anything wrong with that.

You may not like the image in the mirror, but this is the mentality that says others are sub-human.
