It depends on what you call "withstand". People will still be around, and for most everyday life will not change a lot, there will be a lot less "fun" and people into fun lifestiles, but there will be some of those left too. The largest difference will occur in people's heads, expectations will change. Those X-gens who plan to retire at 38 or 45 will find out they're gonna work till 67, most of them.

The above scenario of course assumes there is no major catastrophy in "real" world, like a nuclear war of some kind or the like. Which is, arguably, became more likely since the fall of the USSR, as their weapons and technical personnel spread all other the world.
