Syria defies American warnings
April 2 2003

Syria came closer to forging a formal alliance with Iraq on Monday, picking up the gauntlet thrown by the US and declaring that it had "chosen" to oppose the "illegal and unjustified invasion".

A series of stern US warnings seems only to have hardened Syria's position. Just a few months ago, when President Bashar Assad visited London, Britain thought that it could draw Syria closer to the West. But with the outbreak of war, Damascus has taken up the banner of radical Arab nationalism and has moved closer to Baghdad.

On Friday, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld accused Syria of allowing military equipment to be smuggled to Iraq and warned Damascus: "We consider such trafficking as hostile acts," he said.

Damascus has denied that it is sending, or allowing the transit of, military equipment to Iraq. A statement from its Foreign Ministry accused Washington of seeking "a report for good behaviour from Israel".
