Café Don Quixote

Trees like country preachers
On their rostrums,
Their arms raised in blessing
Over the evening fields.
Every leaf now, every weed
Helping the night
Darken and quiet the world
For what's to come.

Birds of a feather, listen,
Pay attention to me.
I’m setting out astride my phantom Rozinante.
Down a winding road where crows vanish.
Imponderabilia, wherever you're hiding,
Hop in the saddle with me.

No two blades of grass, no two shadows
Whisper our names alike.
CAFÉ DON QUIXOTE in blood-red neon
Just now coming into view
In the vast, dark-clouded,
Storm-threatening West.
