I eluded to this lawsuit happening in a post in early April. While at Comdex in Las Vegas in
November many here may recall I had mentioned I met George Krieger (credited with inventing
both the Zip and Jaz) from Iomega. We talked together at several competitors' booths. I probably
spent more than an hour with him.

While at the Syquest booth George was closely examining both the Syjet drive and cartridge. While
examining the cartridge he said in a quiet voice (more thinking out loud than speaking to me)
"they've even copied this". At the time of his statement I am quite sure he was looking at and
sliding the metal band that covers the portion of the cartridge that inserts first into the drive.

Even though I knew he didn't make the statement to me I asked him "will you sue for patent
infringement?". He answered "we don't have issued patents". I asked "do you have patent
applications filed?". He didn't give me a verbal response. He did give me a very large grin and the
topic was shifted to something else. When the cartridge patent was issued in March I figured if it
was going to happen it would be soon.

I would have expected (and have been expecting) Iomega to file the suit even if Syquest had only
shipped 1 drive. It has absolutely nothing to do with Syquest's level of drive sales. This is all about
protecting intellectual property. If not for the protection given intellectual property I can guarantee
you the aerospace company I work for would not be a DOW 30 stock today! We would be no more
than a mom and pop machine shop.

They continue to DEMONSTRATE they are fully aware of the importance of their proprietary
property and will protect it with a vengeance! Anyway, I just wanted to post that this is nothing
IOM dreamed up last week and seeing my hunch come to pass is pretty special. >>
