Getting troops to kill innocents who panic at checkpoints is also one of the purposes of a suicide-bomber campaign. They had a military analyst on one of the French channels, and this tragedy was naturally mentioned. His response was that the Iraqi suicide bombing strategy was "habile". They (and lots of others worldwide) would really, really, really like to see the US suffer a humiliating defeat from the way the spin is going. Arnett's firing was represented as being due to our not wanting to "entendre la vérité." That was really over the top and I think even they wouldn't have reported it as such if they'd read the transcript.
