Yes, this is going to take a lot of finessing, by the colonial administration we put in power in Iraq. They have got to pretend to be democratic, pretend to be responsive to what the common people want, pretend to let freedom of expression happen. Don't want to end up like Blair, getting called a "lapdog", "toy poodle".
But they can't do any of those things in reality, it can only be a pretense. If they truly held an election, fair and free, the most likely result is a nationalistic, fiercely anti-american government, with close ties to Iran, possibly Islamist, who would order our army and CIA out. Or a tripartite division of the country along religious/ethnic lines. Either of those results would be unacceptable to the NeoCons, so they won't let it happen. The Neocons don't truly belive in democracy, at least not for the 95% of the planet that is not American. For them, the only legitimate elections, are the ones they win. |
