He wasn't fighting Iran 12 years ago.

But when he was fighting Iran, 22 years ago, the official US policy was one of neutrality. When it appeared Saddam would lose quickly, we covertly helped him maintain an equilibrium. A good strategy. Our involvement was sporadic and decidedly arms-length.
