Transmission rates for unprotected heterosexual sex are around 0.1% in the middle stages of the disease and I think 0.5% in early infectious and late stages of the disease. Now given that and the low prevalence in most developed countries outside injecting drug-users, homosexual or prostitutes groups the chances of getting it even if someone IS relatively promiscuous are low. That's why I put it on the list of scares with Mad Cow Disease.

In Africa it is a very serious problem that is reducing life expectancy and population growth rates significantly and in some Asian countries it may be a general population issue. In China though bad medical practice is a significant cause as it maybe was in Africa in the early stages.
