09:59 ET ICN ICN Pharm: Gerard Klauer unmoved by ribavirin SARS prospects (8.95 -0.19)
Gerard Klauer Mattison comments on the excitement about potential use of co's ribavirin in treating SARS. Firm says that just b/c it is being used by some doctors to treat SARS doesn't mean it works. Also notes that ribavirin is not patent protected. Hence, if it were widely used for SARS, there would likely be generic competition.

07:16 ET Doctors in Hong Kong experiment with SARS treatments -- WSJ
The Wall Street Journal reports that doctors in Hong Kong are claiming success in treating SARS with two controversial therapies: a cocktail of antiviral drug ribavirin, and for the most seriously ill patients, transfusions of blood plasma from recovered patients. The ribavirin is used to slow the virus until the swelling in the lungs subsides and the patient builds up antibodies to the disease. Hong Kong clinicians claim that administration of the treatment in the disease's early stages has beaten back SARS in many patients before it could become life-threatening. The city has even begun distributing ribavirin pills as pre-emptive medicine. U.S. doctors are showing less willingness to use ribavirin due to its side-effects and lack of clinical trials for this use. In Toronto, doctors are considering a study to determine whether an oral form of drug is effective. (stocks associated with ribavirin include ICN and RNA).
