Who has now become a poster boy for the right wing's crusade against the academy
More of the same old tired victimology in behalf of the (m)academia nuts..
DeGenova's statement was well-publicized and incendiary. It caught the media's attention, as he intended. That is the reason for the backlash, not the fact that he is a poor, down-trodden, unselfish, pure-minded academic.
If anyone in the public eye--an actor, the Dixie Chicks, you name it--had said "I want a milllion Mogadishus", the repercussions would have been exactly the same.
I know this doesn't fit with your views of academics as helpless, peaceful, intellectually unbiased victims being relentlessly pursued by right-wing ogres, but it's a fact.
I'm sorry I hurt your feelings with this point--I really didn't mean to victimize you with a rational reason for the backlash against the helpless, improperly maligned professor. Pleeeease forgive me.
By the way, the use of the word "crusade" in your rant was waaay cool. |
