I have mixed feelings about the war in Iraq, and a recent profile in the New Yorker really skewers Rumsfeld, who apparently went against all military advice and cut land forces down to a bare minimium in favor of "shock and awe" by air, which has not worked the way he thought, and probably caused unecessary deaths...and anyway, I have no idea whether we need this war or not, whether in fact Hussein would give wmd to terrorists...the issues are SO confusing and we will never be able to sort them all out...

Nonetheless, I have to say, that quote by Powell is inspiring. How many Americans did we lose in WW II? We saved France, for instance. We in fact "saved" the world. We have messed up sometimes and we are an imperialist power but as superpowers go, we are an unusually generous one in many ways.
