I don't understand your statement.

I posted the Lewis piece precisely because of the statement you emphasized. I think it's worthwhile to not that Saddam's approach is not an inherently Arabic approach. It is useful to avoid cheap stereotypes of the Arabic world.

Apropos of nothing -

It is my position that there are three forces competing in the middle east today:
- 1) Pan Arabic Secular Tyranny (Saddam)
- 2) Pan Arabic Theocracry (Iran, Islamism and OBL)
- 3) Capitalism/Democracy/Technology (the Great Satan)

The status quo isn't an option. I don't believe that the current government structures in the Arab world are stable and they will not stand in the face of demographic changes and either of 1) or 2) if the west cannot catalyze 3).
