LOL... I know I found a lot of stuff too but as you say it gets very convoluted. I've always found this stuff very fascinating though ever since I was a kid.

For example for some reason whenever I think of the Roman empire (not a daily happening :o) I have the image in my mind of the empire map under Trajan when they (Romans) temporarily controlled the entire fertile crescent...

Another thing that I found neat was during the Afghan conflict the images of the people, especially many from the north that looked so oriental, like Chinese or Tibetans maybe.. I had for some reason expected to see a more homogeneous population. The visuals really make an impact and in encourage more digging..

Wish I had a lot of time on my hands :o)
