Excellent point. Needs to be made and remade.

Um, one little caveat...every Islamist regime that has existed or is trying to exist defines itself not against the local tyrant, but against the Crusaders, aka The Great Satan, aka us. Great local resonance, sounds well in the mosque, and btw is much, much safer than saying boo against the local tyrant.

Furthermore, the Islamists see all attempts to catalyze capitalism whether as a side-effect of globalization, or deliberate, (cf. Iraq) as part of the Crusades too. So while in theory there may be no need for the Islamists to define themselves at war with the West, in practice they always do...they call it self-defense and the jihad.

Don't agree? Find a counter-example.
